Highlights from this month’s assessment include:
  • GAC Aion presented its new electric vehicle platform AEP 3.0 which will feature 900V architecture and 913kW of power for the Hyper SSR in 2023.
  • The BMW Neue Klasse platform, underpinning BMW’s EV strategy in the second half of this decade, had some more detail released this month.
  • Australia’s Arafura Rare Earths and Hyundai Kia sign a binding agreement for Rare Earth Oxide supply. We cover the permanent magnet supply chain in this month’s Tech Spotlight.

October saw an additional 1.21 million electric motors deployed in EVs around the globe. This is the second highest month on record and tees up a very strong end to 2022 for the EV motor market taking the year to date total to just under 10 million units. Rho Motion’s electric vehicle power tracker witnessed the predictable drop this month as is usual for the first month of a quarter when Tesla deliveries are usually a lower proportion. Despite this the three month rolling average continues to climb at a very fast rate now reaching over 160kW, up nearly 30kW from the same time two years ago.

This is based on monthly vehicle sales and our model-by-model analysis of vehicle motor power.

How do we track the EV motor market?

Our EV Motors Monthly Assessment is a weighted average of electric motor technology across the electric vehicle sector and contains in-depth analysis of vehicle motor power and upstream material demand.

Electric vehicle sales data is obtained from automotive associations at country level. This is done on a model-by-model basis for both BEV and PHEV vehicles for all major markets, and covers a minimum of 90% of total global market sales. This analysis provides a balanced representation of markets with different vehicle characteristics, suppliers and seasonality.

From this stage we assign the appropriate motor technology to each EV model, as multiple motors, often of differing technologies, are common in some vehicle variations. We model this split to generate the most precise overall picture of the industry, which in turn allows us to track the metrics available in the assessment.

Estimates are used where EV specific model data is not explicitly stated. This is based on industry and company reports and primary research. These are then substantiated when official data becomes available.
