In the first half of 2025, the global BESS battery market showed clear signs of accelerated growth, with cell shipments in the first six months of 2025 surpassing the total volume of 2023 by over 17%.
Explore how the top 10 ESS cell producers has evolved since 2023 in the interactive graphic below.
Previously we examined the top BESS system integrator ranking to understand how the BESS industry is changing. Taking a look at the cell supply landscape shows different trends seen within the BESS industry.
Market acceleration is driving Chinese dominance in cell supply
Chinese suppliers continued to dominate, with all of the top ten cell suppliers by shipment volume coming from China in H1 2025. In 2023, both Samsung SDI and LG Energy Solution featured among the leading cell suppliers. However, as LFP preference became more dominant, Korean battery makers, previously advantaged in NCM, have temporarily fallen out of the global top ten ranking.
Competition is driving a less top-heavy market
Although the overall market continues to expand, the market share of leading players has steadily declined. In 2023, the combined market share of the top three suppliers was 58%; in 2024, this dropped to 53%, and to just 46% in H1 2025. Despite rapid market growth, competition is intensifying, with more players successfully capturing share. That said, CATL remained the largest cell supplier to the market, holding a 22% share in H1 2025.
Even so, the cell supplier market still has fewer participants than the system integration segment. This is mainly driven by the low cost of cells, which has lowered entry barriers for new system integrators, and by the fact that it is less capital-intensive to establish a system integration facility than to build a cell manufacturing plant.
Rankings may change as shipment orders get increasingly large
At the company level, shipment rankings are closely tied to the delivery of major orders. In 2024, CALB significantly improved its position after supplying cells to Sungrow for a 12.2GWh order in the Middle East. Meanwhile, BYD fell out of the global top five in the first half of 2025, but with the launch of its 6.5GWh project with Grenergy in Chile in the second half of 2025, its ranking is expected to rebound strongly.
