CATL held an online product launch via livestream on Facebook and YouTube on 16th August 2023 where the company revealed its new ShenXing Superfast Charging battery. This new lithium-ion battery product is an LFP battery capable of 4C fast charging. This will enable the battery to charge from 20% to 80% state-of-charge (SOC) in 10 minutes, adding 400km of range. On a single, full charge the ShenXing battery would provide over 700km of range. CATL also highlighted the technologies low-temperature performance, claiming at -10?C the battery can reach 80% SOC in 30 minutes. LFP batteries in EVs have previously been limited by reduced performance in cold weather.
The technology
CATL went on to describe the developments it had made in each cell component to allow these superfast charging capabilities. The LFP cathode is fully nano-crystallised, which has created the ability for electronic movement in the material to occur in all directions. As opposed to traditional LFP cathode materials where the crystal structure limits the movement of lithium ions in only one dimension. The graphite at the anode has also been modified to improve its fast-charging capabilities, by implementing
