On Thursday 22nd December 2022, Electra Battery Materials Corporation announced the launch of its new lithium-ion battery recycling demonstration plant in Ontario, Canada. Upon completion in Q1 2023, the facility will extract critical minerals from end-of-life batteries, including nickel, cobalt, lithium, copper and graphite. A successful piloting phase could potentially lead to commercialisation in 2023. The plant will be located at Electra’s refinery complex north of Toronto and, forms an important step in achieving the company’s ambition of creating an integrated battery materials park at the location.
The demonstration plant will process up to 75 tonnes of black mass using Electra’s own hydrometallurgical recycling process, which the company claims has a low carbon footprint and causes minimal environmental impact from waste materials.
