On the 19 April 2023, Northvolt and Scania unveiled a jointly developed battery cell for heavy duty vehicles. The cell has reportedly shown an impressive extension in usable lifetime, enabling a heavy-duty truck to travel for 1.5 million kilometres. Northvolt’s press release also points out that the cell’s carbon footprint is one-third of “a comparative industry reference”, although the data used for this comparison is from a relatively old 2019 NCM111 cell. The companies’ partnership on heavy duty commercial electric vehicles began in 2017, with the cells now being produced at Northvolt’s Ett gigafactory in Sweden.
