On 10 November 2022, POSCO Chemical completed the construction of its Gwangyang cathode production facility on the southern coast of South Korea. With a full-scale annual production capacity of 90,000 tons, enough to power roughly 1 million EVs, the facility is the largest cathode production plant in the world. The site expansion took place over four years and three months and, brings the company’s current cathode production capacity up to 105,000 tons per year. The facility features an entirely automated and unmanned production line which benefited from a 300% increase in production capacity because of the expansion.
