During the 46th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) on the 28th August 2023, the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Mukesh Ambani announced the company’s plans to establish a battery gigafactory in India by 2026. This gigafactory will be situated within the Dhirubhai Green Energy Giga Complex in Jamnagar, Gujarat. It will be designed to produce battery chemicals, cells, packs, and containerized energy storage solutions, while also featuring a battery recycling facility. RIL’s comprehensive approach encompasses the entire battery supply chain, from materials to Battery Management Systems (BMS), with a focus on creating safe and reliable batteries boasting high energy density and fast-charging capabilities.
Ambani highlighted that the initial focus will be on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries due to their proven safety, stability, and longevity. The company aims to produce LFP-based solutions at competitive lifecycle costs. The technology will most probably come from Lithium Werks, which RIL acquired last year.
