On the 14th June 2023, battery recycling company Fortum and battery chemical producer Terrafame signed an agreement to cooperate on EV battery materials recycling. The agreement, classed in both press releases as “experimental”, will see Fortum supplying an unspecified quantity of nickel and cobalt recovered from black mass at the Harjavalta plant to Terrafame. The battery chemicals company will then utilise the recycled materials to produce nickel and cobalt sulphates for eventual deployment in EV battery cathode production. The cooperation between the two Finnish companies is set to commence almost immediately in June 2023, with both parties expecting the cooperation to last “several years”, although no specific time period for the agreement was given.
