On 8th September, the Chinese battery maker Gotion, and J.B.Pritzker, the governor of Illinois announced Gotion’s decision to establish a lithium battery manufacturing gigafactory in Manteno Illinois. The establishment of the battery plant has been encouraged by a REV Illinois (Reimagining Energy and Vehicles) incentive package and the new Invest in Illinois fund. The investment will be worth USD2 billion with Illinois incentives valued at up to USD536 million. The gigafactory is set to come online by 2024.
Welcoming a world leading battery manufacturer
The ‘most significant manufacturing investment in Illinois in decades,’ will bring 2,600 jobs along with the USD2 billion gigafactory investment. The plant will concentrate on lithium-ion battery cell and battery pack production, as well as energy storage system integration. Once online and at full capacity, the battery manufacturing plant is expected to produce 10GWh of lithium-ion battery packs and 40GWh of lithium-ion battery cells. This will help to strengthen the supply chain and aid the EV ecosystem to meet the growing demand for batteries across the EV sector in North America. Gotion has not confirmed the battery chemistry for the new facility. The site area will encompass roughly 150 acres.
