South Korean cell and battery manufacturer Samsung SDI and US automaker General Motors (GM) have announced they plan to jointly build an EV battery manufacturing plant in the US. The prospective joint venture will receive an investment of over USD3 billion and is targeting an annual production capacity of over 30GWh. Mass production is expected to commence in 2026, with no location currently announced for the production site. The facility will produce high-nickel content prismatic and cylindrical cells that will be supplied exclusively to GM’s EV product range.

GM already has a JV with another Korean cell manufacturer LG Energy Solution to construct three cell manufacturing plants in the US, with the latest in Michigan expected to begin production in 2024.
