The American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) has demonstrated that its commercial-scale lithium-ion battery recycling facility in Reno, Nevada, can achieve 115% of its maximum design rate during a fixed duration operation. This facility is designed to process 20,000 tonnes of battery feedstock annually. The successful fixed period operation is a crucial steppingstone towards transitioning the facility to continuous operations.
A successful first phase
The Reno facility employs a recycling method that involves battery deconstruction followed by a targeted hydrometallurgical process. This system is designed to handle a wide range of battery sizes and chemistries. During the initial recycling phase, the facility produces recycled materials such as copper, aluminium, steel, a lithium intermediate, and a black mass intermediate. In the second phase, these intermediate materials are further refined into battery-grade nickel sulphate, cobalt sulphate, manganese sulphate, and lithium hydroxide. Currently, only the first phase of the facility is operational, with the company in the process of completing the second refining phase.
