Battery materials producer BASF has announced a pause in the construction of its battery recycling facility in Tarragona, Spain. The company cited a slowdown in the growth of EV sales as the reason for putting the project on hold. BASF is the latest in a series of companies re-evaluating their recycling plans for Europe.
BASF pauses Spanish facility
In its Q2 earnings report, BASF stated, “We have also decided to pause our large-scale refinery project for battery recycling in Tarragona, Spain, until cell capacity build-up and the EV adoption rate in Europe regain momentum.” While the capacity and technology specifics of the plant had not been announced, the company confirmed that it would involve black mass refining.
BASF’s other facilities
BASF currently operates a pilot-scale facility in Schwarzheide, Germany, which opened in April 2024. This facility is Europe’s first co-located centre for battery recycling and battery material production. It takes end-of-life (EoL) batteries or production scrap and feeds them directly back into BASF’s cathode active materials (CAM) plant, thus reintegrating them into the battery supply chain.
