The EU has announced the results from the fifth AFIF (Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility) funding round. A total of EUR424 million (USD450 million) will be allocated to 42 projects to support zero-emission mobility and help expand the European TEN-T road network. Within the 42 projects, 4,200 chargers will be funded as well as 48 hydrogen refuelling stations and electrification of ground handling services at 21 airports.
More than two-thirds of the funding towards charging
Of the total funding awarded, 70% was allocated towards EV charging stations for 31 projects. Spain received the largest portion of funding, amounting to EUR70 million (USD74 million) to be spread across four projects. Following closely, the Netherlands secured EUR69 million (USD73 million) for six projects and then Portugal received EUR55 million (USD58 million) for a single project, named eGOANA. The project is to install 589 chargers at nine Portuguese airports to contribute to the decarbonisation of airside ground operations. Other projects include EV charging hubs with fast chargers to be deployed on highways as well as truck and bus depot charging stations.
