Europe’s homegrown battery industry has taken another hit this month as both Northvolt and VW scale back battery production plans. Following an initial strategic review of its operations, Northvolt plans to put a primary focus on its large scale cell manufacturing, deprioritising its cathode and energy storage systems production. VW now plans to build just one of two production lines at its Salzgitter facility in Northern Germany.
Northvolt, confirmation of rumours as its headache continues
Northvolt has confirmed three primary actions to consolidate its business amid “a challenging macroeconomic environment” as part of its on-going strategic review.
- At its Skelleftea gigafactory, Northvolt Ett, it will suspend its cathode production, instead allowing the facility to focus solely on cell production.
- It has cancelled its plans for a cathode production facility in Borlange, Sweden. The plant initially slated to come online this year was set to have a capacity of 100GWh of cathode materials per annum. The site is now expected to be sold.
- It is looking for an investor for its energy storage system production facility in Gdansk, Poland. Putting into doubt the future of the facility.
