Norwegian battery cell producer, Morrow, has opened Europe’s first LFP gigafactory. On the 16th of August, Norway’s Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Store opened Europe’s first gigawatt-scale LFP factory in Arendal, Norway. This comes just under two years after the company began building the facility. The company has already released its A and B cell samples for validation and earlier in 2024 signed its first supply contract. Morrow hopes to supply the ever-growing BESS market in Europe.
Who is Morrow?
Morrow, a Norwegian battery manufacturer and developer, was established in 2020 by a consortium that includes the Norwegian hydropower producer A Energy, along with ABB, Siemens, and other partners. In the Nordic region, Morrow stands alongside other key battery manufacturers such as Northvolt and Freyr.
Morrow is targeting the energy storage market, with applications ranging from behind-the-meter solutions to larger utility-scale projects. Additionally, it is focusing on heavy commercial sectors like rail and marine. Looking ahead, Morrow also plans to expand into mobility applications.
The initial phase of its facility is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year, providing an annual production capacity of 1GWh. With plans for expansion, Morrow aims to increase its annual production capacity to 43GWh by 2029, through the addition of three further phases, each contributing 14GWh.
